Online Friends IRL

A weird dynamic

In this week's P.O. Box:

  • IRL/Online crossover

  • Stream roundup & Pick ‘Ems

  • On Tap: DFS After Dark & Week 8 DFS Cram

One of the weird dynamics of “working” online is coming to grips with the fact that the majority of your “social life” takes place on the internet.

This really became evident when COVID hit.

Before the pandemic, most of my social life took place IRL. I regularly performed improv in Boston. I played rec sports. I would—gasp—meet up with friends for drinks.

But when we were all forced indoors, those in-person dynamics dwindled. Instead of doing make ‘em ups in a small black box theater, I started streaming online.

Lauren and I had a trip planned to Japan in the spring of 2020. Around the same time, Bric75 sent me a message about starting a DFS podcast. I declined. I was busy, after all. I was going to Japan! Of course, we cancelled the trip when we got wind of the outbreak at the Diamond Princess. I “circled back” with Brian and said, “Actually…let’s do it.”

That show became LOLZ, which I’ve done with Bric weekly for 4+ years now. I’ve still never met Bric IRL, though. Probably because he’s too busy being one of the top ranked Madden players in the world.

This week I did meet up with another one of my long-time collaborators, though. JMToWin—who I’ve done DFS shows with for 3 years now—was visiting his family in New England. We met up for a few hours on Wednesday and it was a real treat.

Our kids played on the beach. We took a photo. The internet said we looked like paid actors for JC Penny. It was a grand old time.

On Saturday, I’m doing DFS After Dark with my friend Mike Zakarian. We go way back having done improv together, but now overlap doing content within the fantasy sports space. It’ll be a fun crossover of sorts—real world/online, NFL/NBA.

The IRL meet ups with long-time collaborators are always a blast. I’ve been fortunate to do it a bunch over the years with Ship Chasing, the Deposit Kingdom, and countless other internet friends. Online is a great proxy, but nothing can replicate hanging out IRL.

Here’s to more excuses to walking away from the screen and getting out the house.
