⌚ Watch Out, I'm A New Man

Trying it on for size...

In this week's P.O. Box:

  • Oh no, am I a “wearable” bro

  • Stream roundup: Bijan tilt

  • On tap: Block Party, Off & On The Clock, After Dark, Week 8 Cram

  • On my radar: Dawg Bowl mania

Earlier this summer I asked the internet for recommendations on a smart watch.

I essentially wanted it for a single use-case: listening to music/podcasts while exercising so I can run around my neighborhood without wearing an arm-band for my phone and looking like a goddamn boomer:

Well, I finally pulled the trigger and got the new Pixel 2 watch the other day after learning it could support both Pocketcasts (my preferred podcast platform) & Spotify downloads for offline listening.

I went for my first phone-less run on Wednesday and it was glorious:

A phone might only weigh 6 or 7 ounces, but I felt like I could have run a sub 5-minute mile (spoiler: I did not) without being burdened by a device that was choking off circulation on my bicep for 30 minutes.

Here’s the thing, though. These smart watches are a slippery slope.

I’ve never been one of those people who care about how many steps they’ve taken or what “active zone” they were in while exercising.

I don’t look down on it, either, by the way. Gamification stuff is a great hack to jump start positive habits. But I’ve always preferred listening to my body and being very intuitive with most of my health and fitness behavior.

This goddamn timepiece, though, is trying its damnedest to force me to care about all of this micro tracking. It comes pre-loaded with the FitBit stuff and it’s already out here trying to remind me to move more (buddy, I need to draft these Dawg Bowl teams first) or later congratulating me on how many steps I’ve taken (thanks, I’ll let all my mom know that I crested 10k on the day).

I know I can go turn this stuff off, but I’ve found myself dabbling a bit out of pure curiosity (I ballparked that walk at 2.25 miles and it’s actually 2.39, neat!).

I’ll never wear this thing when I sleep—that’s a bridge too far—but I am enjoying this new wrist companion…for now.

I’m curious if any of you other wearable peeps use it for anything interesting that I should look into.

I’ve barely had time to browse the app store or stumble upon any other functions that may be useful.

If you got any tips for me, reply to this e-mail and let me know…us wearable bros gotta stick together.

🙏 The absurdly sharp Sackreligious, who co-hosts Stat Chasing with Drico, punched his ticket to Miami in Week 7 thanks to a sick Lamar Jackson/Mark Andrews + D’Onta Foreman combo.

🧠 He then shared essentially his entire process for attacking Underdog drafts in this highly actionable interview with the Badge Bros.

👑 The continued streak of Deposit Kingdom members qualifying for the live final has me worried, though. I explain here.

💻️ I’m trying my best to earn a seat myself, but these rooms are brutal.

🤑 Luckily, Underdog is running a nice promo again where anyone who completes 10 or more entries will get $25 in bonus cash for any entries that finish in the top 2,000.
