In this week's P.O. Box:

  • My brand is under attack

  • Stream roundup: Randomizer returns

  • Offszn Book Club: June selections

  • On tap: Best Ball After Dark w/ Dwain McFarland

  • Promo Code Pete: That’s Fair

One of the byproducts of streaming hundreds of drafts over the years is that I’ve developed some very quick reflexes.

There have been countless moments where I’ve had to make a literal last second pick as the draft clock neared expiration.

Sometimes it’s because I got distracted with the chat. Other times it’s because I’m trying to reach a consensus with a guest (Shawn Siegele is notorious with the filibusters). Sometimes it’s manufactured via a difficult Randomizer prompt. And on other occasions, I’m trying to set world drafting records.

Regardless, I pride myself on my nimble fingers.

But recently, they’ve come under attack.

On last week’s episode of Ship Chasing, I failed to select our preferred QB (Kirk Cousins) in time and instead got auto-drafted an unstacked Justin Herbert. I was pissed…and so were my co-hosts.

I tried to spin zone the mistake as a blessing in disguise, but the damage was done.

It didn’t end there.

In last night’s debut Randomizer draft with Matt Harmon, my detractors received even more ammo as a glitch conspired against my nimble fingers and resulted in a devastating Skyy Moore selection.

I’ll be spending the rest of the weekend drilling my own “Finger Fundamentals!” course.

It might take me the rest of the summer to rehab my “nimble fingers” personal brand, but I refuse not to return my digits to their former, dexterous glory.

🖼 Book #9 for May (COMPLETE): The Art Thief by Michael Finkel

The first three quarters of this book is all thriller—heists, deception, and a billion dollar art collection hidden in an attic. And It’s all orchestrated by a rare art thief who actually cares about the art. But then the final quarter reveals the sad reality that Breitwieser at his core is just a serial kleptomaniac who gets a high from stealing.

He feels as though he lived a hundred lifetimes while stealing, and at age thirty-four he’s old and defeated.

His partner in crime, Anne-Catherine, often asked what the end game was to his thievery. When would it stop? When would it be enough? We do eventually get the answer (it’s never enough).

🛶 Book #10 for June (NON-FICTION): River of Doubt by Candice Millard

At once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographical portrait, The River of Doubt is the true story of Theodore Roosevelt’s harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on earth.

Some of my favorite reads over the past five years have been non-fiction adventure stories (The Tiger by John Vaillant, Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson, and The Lost City of Z by David Grann, to name a few), and I wanted to get something along those lines for a fun summer read.

This story certainly fits the bill and is even more compelling considering it comes directly after Roosevelt lost the 1912 election. The impetus of his expedition was basically to do something so difficult and dangerous that it took his mind off his humiliating defeat.

🕵 Book #11 for June (FICTION): The Hunter by Tana French

It’s a blazing summer when two men arrive in a small village in the West of Ireland. One of them is coming home. Both of them are coming to get rich. One of them is coming to die.

Multiple people recommended Tana French in the Deposit Kingdom Discord, so I figured it was a logical selection. I had a hard time deciding which of her novels to include, but her latest has been getting rave reviews so I went with that.
