The People's Dev

An appreciation post...

In this week's P.O. Box:

  • The man powering the UD sweats

  • Dawg Bowl recap

  • Stream roundup & Pick ‘Ems

  • On Tap: DFS After Dark & Week 15 DFS Cram

As the game of best ball has grown in popularity, so has the desire of drafters to sweat every last piece of minutia associated with their teams.

I personally would rather distract myself with daily contests than stare at pot that might never boil, but this isn’t about me.

This is about the general best ball populace and let me tell you…when it comes to hawking their teams, they are insatiable.

I have my issues with hyper-focusing on what is literally a single slate—it’s not helpful or productive—but this train long left the station and I’m not here to dissuade people from obsessing over their teams (provided they can do it in a semi-rational way).

Instead, I want to shout out a single individual who has put the Best Ball Sweat Industrial Complex on his goddamn back.

That’s Patrick Donovan aka PD aka the man behind BBMDB.com.

Patrick first created BBMD so Underdog drafters could review a Best Ball Mania leaderboard in real time and sift through individual teams.

But he didn’t stop there. He kept adding new features.

Filters sorting by user, players, roster constructions. An exposures tab that allows for some hilarious fact checking when someone is farming engagement on X. He added a leaderboard for the Marathon contest. He even provided us with some weekly Battle Royale data.

Again, he didn’t stop.

A few weeks ago he added a tool that allowed users to see their actual advancing vs. an expected advancing.

And then for kicks, this week he added an entire BBMV playoff sim that allowed people to roll sims like slot machines and see if they could find a scenario where they won $1.5m.

congrats chipsy

And he did this all out of the goodness of his own heart and for the love of game. No one is currently paying for his efforts.

I don’t know what PD’s end game is or if he even wants to turn this side project into a full time job (we are trying to get an After Dark on the books), but I know if I were Underdog I’d be beating down his door to come work for me.

In the mean time, if you’ve spent any time on his site, consider tossing him a few bucks on Venmo (@patrobdon) for this tireless work. Or at the very least give him a follow on X, where he regularly posts interesting data insights from the tournaments.
