In this week's P.O. Box:

  • One Battle After Another is so good

  • Content roundup: Week 5 prep

  • Underdog Masterclass: Another 50k winner (+ a free lesson)

  • On Tap: After Dark, Week 5 Cram & ShipCast

  • Book Club: Endure

With a second to come up for air, I figured it was time for a pop culture roundup and some recommendations…

Movie of the year: One Battle After Another. This movie hit every note for me. I saw it Wednesday night with Lauren and haven’t stopped thinking about it. The best movie I’ve seen in theaters since There Will Be Blood, another Paul Thomas Anderson banger with a nervy Johnny Greenwood score. Everything is gripping. It’s hilarious (Leo’s Bob character going full Dad mode before his daughter’s dance was a personal highlight). It’s heartbreaking (this really is a father/daughter movie at its core). And it never slows down (even with a nearly three-hour runtime, there’s nothing about it that drags). It’s worth making a special trip to the theaters for.

🥇 Album of the year: Dijon’s Baby. It seems impossible that the artist responsible for my favorite album of the year was also in the movie of the year, but it truly is the year of Dijon Duenas. If you need a quick reference point—Baby sounds like if Bon Iver collaborated with Frank Ocean on an album produced by mk.gee. I really don’t like the challenge of picking a favorite song, but “Baby!” and “Rewind” would be my 1-2 punch. Can’t wait to see him in Boston later this fall.

📺 TV recommendations: Task & Dept. Q. We are loving Task right now, the new HBO crime drama starring Mark Ruffalo from the same guy who did Mare of Easttown. There really is no mystery to be solved in this one (other than teasing out who the mole(s) are), but tracking the fallout from a series of violent robberies by an unsuspecting crew is wildly entertaining.

I’ll also shout out Dept. Q on Netflix, which we watched last month. It’s another British crime thriller about a sad boy detective who becomes obsessed with a cold case. If you like Slow Horses (excited to dive into the new season when we get a sec), you’ll dig this.

A quick Underdog Masterclass roundup for the week…

🤑 Another 50k winner. Absolutely insane, but we now have back-to-back first place finishers in the Battle Royale who took the Masterclass. What a cool story from JDENNIS22:

After Dark is back to Saturday night (8pm ET) this week with the regular season goat Mathology getting us prepped for the Week 5 slate:

And then we’ll have the ShipCast at 4pm ET. Chargers/Commanders should be fun…

Sorry for the audible, but neither of the books I put holds on have freed up. An old hold did become available, so I just started Endure by Alex Hutchinson:

A fascinating and definitive exploration of the extraordinary science of human endurance and the secrets of human performance.

I heard Alex do an interview on the Brandon Adams podcast a while back and thought it would be a fun book to read so I’m going to tackle this one for now.
