It says it’s 24 degrees out right now.
I always hate when this time of year hits because the combination of the cold weather and daylight saving time threaten to derail a lot of the positive habits I’ve established over the course of the year.
In hopes of keeping me from slipping too much, here’s an honest report card of where I’m at with a lot of my 2025 resolutions as we enter the heart of winter and the final stretch of the NFL season.
🔴 Steps. I’ve really prioritized getting 10k+ steps in most days this year and was absolutely cruising until the past month or so. I’m down from an average of 10-12k steps/day, to more like 6-7k. It’s almost entirely due to weather. I’m not bundling April up for a walk around the neighborhood at 7am like I did in July. I’m also not chasing her around at playgrounds as much since we are forced to more indoor activities. I have been sucking it up and taking some calls while on walks, but seeing “4.4k” on my watch as I walked up the stairs to bed last night was frustrating.
🔴 Book club. My reading always slows down naturally in the season because I have more nights where I’m up working and am too tired to read before bed, but I’ve really slacked this fall. Part of it is due to not landing on a book selection I’ve loved (more on that below) and part of it is just not making time for it. We’ll regroup in 2026.
🟡 Exercise. I’m still consistent with working out 3x a week and running 2x a week, but I have noticed that I’m not pushing myself as hard as I did in the summer. My brain is firmly in “maintenance mode” right now. I did recently upgrade my regular bench to an incline bench, so that’s been energizing to have a new piece of equipment.
🟡 Alcohol rule. I have stayed committed to my resolution of no drinking in the house, which has been great. Of course, with the holidays and birthdays and travel, there are way more opportunities for me to drink outside the house and I’ve been taking advantage of those in a way that is counter-productive to the original goal. I’m due for a stricter detox in 2026.
🟢 Yoga. Locking in to yoga has probably been my biggest W of the year. I go to a studio 2-3x a week and wish I could go even more. It’s done wonders for my lower back pain (basically non-existent now), it’s an hour away from my phone that doubles as meditation, and it’s a legitimately good workout (I’ve been doing “Power Yoga” mostly).
🟢 Sleep. Ever since I started getting up earlier, it’s been easy for me to go to bed on time. It’s pretty rare for me to get less than 8 hours of sleep, which has been massively beneficial.
I’m just going to try to keep the train on the tracks until January, but excited to dial in some new habits/goals when the season is over.
